This Wednesday, May 3, the North Carolina Bar Association Health Law Section will be partnering with the North Carolina Bar Foundation and the Lupus Foundation of America, North Carolina Chapter, to host a Wills for Heroes event.

Wills for Heroes is a free legal clinic offered by the North Carolina Bar Foundation in which volunteer attorneys draft simple wills, health care powers of attorney, financial powers of attorney, and advance directives for first responders and their families, free of charge.

This particular Wills for Heroes event will take place virtually, between 8:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. on May 3, and will benefit Lupus survivors and their spouses from the Charlotte and Raleigh areas.

Attorney Volunteers

The Health Law Section, Bar Foundation, and Lupus Foundation are actively seeking at least 10 volunteer attorneys to virtually meet with Lupus survivors and their spouses via Zoom and to prepare wills and other estate planning documents on their behalf.

With the online platform the Bar Foundation provides, volunteer attorneys do not need to have a background or exposure to trusts and estates work.

If you are interested in volunteering as an attorney, please register to do so through this link.

Notary Volunteers

We are also actively seeking volunteer notaries to assist Lupus survivors and their spouses in notarizing their estate planning documents. The notarizations will take place in person, on two separate days, although volunteers will only be expected to notarize documents on the date they select.

Notarizations for the Raleigh area will take place between 9:30 a.m. and noon on Tuesday, May 9, at the Bar Association, located at 8000 Weston Parkway, Cary, N.C. 27513, in conference room B. Notarizations for the Charlotte area will take place at a date, and location, to be determined.

If you are interested in volunteering as a notary, please register to do so through this link.

A special thanks is owed to Lawyers Mutual Liability Insurance Company of North Carolina for their generous support in allowing the Bar Foundation to organize Wills for Heroes clinics for first responders across North Carolina.

If you have any questions about this event, please send an email to [email protected].

Upcoming Health Law Section Social Event

Separately, for those of you interested in engaging with the Health Law Section, and meeting its members, the section will be hosting a social event on Thursday, May 25 at 5:30 p.m. at Joymongers Brewing Co., located at 576 N Eugene St., Greensboro, N.C. 27401.

We very much look forward to your volunteering for the Wills for Heroes clinic, and seeing you at our upcoming social event!
