Past Paralegal Division Chairs Virginia Burrows, Annette Phelps, Grace Ward and Karen Mendorg attended the PD Annual Meeting in Pinehurst
May is an exciting month at the Bar Center. Hopefully you’ve seen the various announcements about May being Member Appreciation Month where, “Members come first at the NCBA, and this year we wanted to do a little extra to express our gratitude, so we’re kicking off our first-ever Member Appreciation Month.” Check out the blog post on May Member Benefits for more details.
The Paralegal Division agrees 100 percent that members come first! For years, May has always been the time for members to gather and attend our Annual Meeting and CPE. This year’s Annual Meeting was made extra special by celebrating the 20th Anniversary of the Paralegal Division! We celebrated May 3-4, 2018 in Pinehurst with a Thursday evening reception followed by a 6-hour CPE seminar and lunch Annual Meeting on Friday! The CPE Committee did an outstanding job with the course offerings and speakers!
Now that you have submitted the client’s Articles of Organization to the North Carolina Secretary of State’s office for filing, it’s time to prepare a draft operating agreement.

It seems like yesterday that we were celebrating our 15th Anniversary at the Grandover in Greensboro and at The Grove Park Inn in Asheville. I’m excited to share that we will be celebrating our 20th anniversary at the Pinehurst Resort May 3-4, 2018. The celebration kicks off Thursday evening, May 3, with a reception starting at 5:30 p.m. on the Front Porch and continues at our Annual Meeting on May 4.
I hope that you will make every effort to attend. That being said, I’m sure you have noticed the increase in the cost of our Annual Meeting. I want to take this opportunity to apologize and provide a brief explanation.

The Paralegal Division, the NCBA, and the world lost a great man on February 17, 2018 with the passing of former, longtime NCBA Executive Director Allan Head. Allan was a staunch supporter of paralegals and the driving force behind the creation of the Legal Assistants Division, now the Paralegal Division. Allan worked closely with past Paralegal Division Chairs until his retirement in 2016. He motivated us, believed in us and even pushed us to move outside our comfort zones. He made us better leaders and people. To highlight and pay a small tribute to the mark he left on the Paralegal Division, our past Division Chairs share their memories of Allan.

Welcome to 2018! I must admit this post has been a few weeks in the making. Between the dusting of snow right after the new year that cancelled school for a few days to digging out from more snow last week (and more cancelled school), I had trouble finding time to squeeze in everything I wanted to do. But alas, the snow has melted and the sun is shining and I’ll say it again “Welcome to 2018!” A new year always brings resolutions for improving our personal lives, health, fitness, etc. Has anyone’s resolution to be organized and on top of things already gone by the wayside (see above excuses)? We spend a lot of energy working to keep our resolutions intact (well at least to February) and kudos to those still succeeding! But, if your resolutions are sliding, it can be easy to fall back into our comfort zone and regular routine. Read more

It’s hard to believe that Christmas is almost upon us – I have found that it’s true that the older you get, the faster time flies by! We all need to stop, take a deep breath, enjoy all of the blessings we have, and remember the reason for the season! With that in mind, I want to take a minute to update you on a few happenings within the Paralegal Division.
