How Our Section Communicates: A Quick Guide from the PDS Communications Chair
This guide provides a practical refresher on the communication tools most commonly used within our Section. Each platform serves a distinct purpose and supports different types of member engagement.
1. Listserv
The Listserv is the primary channel for sharing updates, asking questions and exchanging information. When the platform launched in 2020, Julianne Dambro posted an introductory message titled “Welcome to Your New Privacy and Data Security Platform!” The post, which is available online through the section’s Discussion tab (Welcome to your new Privacy & Data Security platform! | Privacy & Data Security), includes an instruction sheet outlining three options for posting to the forum and remains a clear guide to posting, replying and managing Listserv settings.
The simplest way to post is by emailing [email protected] directly from your NCBA email account.
All Listserv messages are archived on the Privacy & Data Security Community Home page under the “Discussion” tab, with entries dating back to 2020.
2. Section Blog
The Section Blog is used for long‑form content. Suitable types of posts include:
- Articles on developments in privacy, data security, or AI
- Case summaries/Regulatory or enforcement matters
- Practice tips
- Event or CLE recaps
- Updates from Section leadership
- Thought pieces on emerging trends
All Section members are welcome to contribute.
Submission Process: Blog posts should be emailed to the Section’s Communications Chair. Submissions should include a professional headshot and a link to the contributor’s LinkedIn profile or firm/company website. The Communications Chair can be identified in “Section Leadership,” and contact information is available under “Current Members.”
Section blog posts dating back to 2018 can be accessed from the Section’s home page via the “Community Login” box → Recent NCBarBlog Posts → “Go to NCBarBlog.” Blog post from all NCBA Sections, archived together and searchable by month and year back to 2015, can also be accessed through the NCBA member portal: For Members → Benefits → News + Communications → NCBarBlog.com.
3. “What’s Blowing My Mind” Video Series
This short‑form video series highlights timely developments, trends, or ideas in privacy and data security. The format is designed for topics that are new, fast‑moving or noteworthy, even if they do not require in‑depth analysis.
Any Section member may create a video or suggest a topic.
Submission involves two steps:
(i) Record your video via the NCBA Communities Video Collection platform. The platform allows you to record as many times as you wish until you are ready to submit. You will be asked to sign a release prior to submitting the video.
(ii) Email the Communications Chair with the subject line “WBMM video,” including the contributor’s name, their headshot, a link to their LinkedIn profile or firm/company website, a video title and a one- to two-sentence summary of the topic.
Archived videos are available on the Section’s blog page.
4. The Library
The Library serves as the Section’s general resource repository. It includes the Section’s Bylaws and legal resources such as EU Standard Contractual Clauses (SCCs). These materials are available under the “Library” tab on the Community Home page. The Library currently contains 46 archived entries dating back to 2020. Members may create entries directly from the Library interface.
Each platform supports a different type of communication:
• Listserv — quick updates and questions
• Blog — structured, lasting content
• Video series — brief, accessible insights
• Library — general resources and references
This overview is intended to support effective use of the Section’s communication tools. Suggestions for improving information‑sharing practices are always welcome.
