Registration is now underway for the Paralegal Division’s 2023 Annual Meeting scheduled for Friday, May 5, 2023, at the North Carolina Bar Center, 8000 Weston Parkway, Cary, NC. This year’s theme is “Paralegal 101: Back to the Basics,” which will bring a variety of topics to help paralegals take their careers to the next level.

The Diversity and Inclusion Committee will host a reception on Thursday, May 4, 2023, from 5 to 7 p.m. Come join us for food, fun and music as we prepare for a Friday full of CPEs!

We will kick off the day with Sunrise Yoga, beginning at 7:30 a.m. Grab your mat and water, and join us for a morning of relaxation and meditation that will leave you feeling refreshed for the rest of the day! We will continue the day at 8:25 a.m. with our registration and continental breakfast to get you fueled for the day.

We will have a full agenda of CPEs for our members. Starting at 9 a.m., the CPE will begin with Sidney Minter, Attorney at Advance Auto, who will be speaking on diversity in the corporate workplace. At 10 a.m., Stephanie Crosby of Ward and Smith, P.A., will provide an insightful view on identifying corporate structures. The final morning session, beginning at 11:20 a.m., will be composed of a breakout session: one session with Matthew M. Villmer of Villmer Caudill, PLLC exploring trending topics in real estate; the second session involves Sharon Crabbe of First Citizens Bank discussing financial crime and bank fraud in the banking industry.

Following the Paralegal Division Annual Meeting and lunch, the afternoon session will begin at 1:20 p.m., with another breakout session: the first session features Jonathan L. Crook, attorney and owner of the Blue Pencil Box, LLC, discussing noncompete agreements and how to defend them; the second session will have Tiffany M. Lopez of Smith Anderson providing legal research tips and tools. At 2:30 p.m., Jessica Grant of The Odum Institute for Research in Social Science will provide insight on ethical data collection. At 3:40 p.m., Julie D. Beavers of Lawyers Mutual Liability Insurance Company of North Carolina will close our meeting with a discussion on redefining the practice of law.

Our CPE Committee (Alice Johnson, Paulene Scott Kearney, and Kimberly Johnson) has been hard at work to prepare a day full of insightful and relevant CPEs for all of our paralegal members. Early registration for the Annual Meeting ends on April 14, 2023, so sign up today. We look forward to seeing you there!
