The SLD Has Met!

By Leon Corbett

The Senior Lawyers Division had its Spring Meeting on April 15; once again on Zoom, with the Chair, Justice Rhoda Billings, presiding. The meeting was preceded by a meeting of the Council on April 13, and the Bar Association’s CLE program “Planning for Success: Succession Planning and Business Continuity for All Stages of Your Legal Career” intervened on April 14. Attendance at the Spring Meeting was nearly 50 members. Business included the election of the Chair-Elect, Judge Richard Doughton; Secretary, Ed Gaskins; Treasurer, Hank Van Hoy; Council Member, Lynn Gullick; Council Member, Susan Olive; Council Member, Barbara Morgenstern; and Council Member, Elizabeth Quick.

Doris Bray is the Chair-Elect, and she will take office on July 1, 2021. Doris has been working on having a meeting of the Division at Litchfield, south of Myrtle Beach, for a couple of years now, and the pandemic has wiped it off the schedule twice. But hope springs eternal, and she is working at it again. Next meeting at Litchfield! (We hope.)

It is hard to get warmth and togetherness in a Zoom meeting, but we found a good way to bring some of that back by turning again to Wade Smith, who delivered an address titled, “The Man Who Drowned in A Barrel of Beer.” It contained a bit of humor, a dash of humble beginnings, a story of success, a good testament to the character and strength of his mentor (Justice Higgins), a little speculation on time and the nature of the universe, and a sampling of philosophy. All delivered with humility and warmth.

And you can see it right here:

Wade is a painter, a musician, a great lawyer and most of all a fine person and friend well met. You can read of his accomplishments in the links below. You will see that he has been recognized with all the awards. And, the NCBA has created an award named for him in order to share some with other people as well. Our many thanks to Wade!
