A Letter to My Younger Self
Dear Younger Sully,
There’s so much I wish I could share with you, especially about navigating the world as a young attorney. Here are some lessons I’ve learned along the way, including things that have become increasingly important — physical and mental health. Plus, there are some lessons from battles you’ve yet to face.
Firstly, let’s talk about your career. It’s incredible that you’ve chosen this path — it’s challenging, demanding, and rewarding. Remember, mistakes will happen, and they’re not a reflection of your worth. Learn from them, adapt, and grow. Embrace every opportunity to learn, whether from victories or setbacks. Every case, every client, every experience will shape you into the attorney you’re meant to become. Some things you have kept in your quiver through every stage of your life will continue to help you: your passion and compassion, your steadfast work ethic, and your ability to build connections with anyone you meet. You are better equipped than you know.
But work isn’t everything. Your well-being matters just as much. I can’t stress enough how crucial it is to prioritize your health — both physically and mentally. As tempting as it might be to pull all-nighters and sacrifice everything for a case, it’s not sustainable. Take breaks, nurture hobbies, exercise and make time for loved ones. Find a balance between work and life; it’s not just about longevity in your career but also about enjoying the journey.
Invest in your spiritual health now. Meditate, journal, practice gratitude. Appreciate your breath and your community, and those who ground you to what is important. Your spiritual journey will be the anchor amidst life’s storms, offering solace, clarity, and resilience. And you will face storms.
Your physical health journey will take unexpected turns. You’ll face aggressive lymphoma, a formidable opponent, and look your mortality right in the face. This battle will teach you resilience beyond measure. Embrace the strength within you, and never underestimate the power of hope, positivity, and the unwavering support of loved ones during such trials. Through it all, remember to give yourself grace — there’s strength in vulnerability and seeking help when needed.
Also, you’re going to transition at a time that will seem like the absolutely worst time: It’s the right time. The journey to discovering and embracing your true self will be a profound and transformative experience. It’s okay to feel uncertain or afraid. Embrace your authenticity, and know that self-discovery is a journey, not a race. Your journey of self-discovery will intertwine with your spiritual path. Embracing your authentic self, understanding your essence, and finding alignment within will be part of your spiritual awakening. Embrace this journey with openness, for it will lead you to profound self-acceptance and inner peace.
Equally vital is your mental health. Your mental well-being is as essential as any case you’ll handle. Don’t hesitate to seek help or talk to someone when things feel overwhelming.
Lastly, don’t forget your support network. Surround yourself with mentors, friends, and family who uplift and inspire you, but don’t be afraid to move on from those who hold you back. Lean on your support network when needed; they’re your anchors in stormy seas and their presence will be a source of immense strength. They’ve got your back, as you always have theirs.
I won’t lie — this journey won’t always be easy, but every moment, every hurdle, and every success will shape you into a resilient, compassionate, and capable attorney. Embrace the challenges, celebrate victories (big or small), and never forget to take care of yourself along the way.
With love and belief in your potential,
S. Collins Saint
