More Than the Law: Why Having Hobbies Helps Lawyers

The practice of law demands precision, resilience and focus, but we’re at our best when we bring our full selves to the profession. How can we make sure we are at our best? That was the theme of a recent discussion hosted by NCBA YLD joined by NCBA BarCARES President Eric Richardson and members of the NCBA YLD Pro Bono Cohort.

The group explored what hobbies can teach us about being good people — and better legal professionals. From pottery to poetry, marathon running to yoga, the conversation highlighted that growth takes time, both personally and professionally. One participant discussed their passion for making pottery and what it has taught them about resilience and perseverance. Like mastering any craft, building a fulfilling legal career isn’t about instant perfection but about consistency and reflection.

There’s no single formula for success. As one participant noted, “‘normal’ looks different for everyone.” Some lawyers thrive through structured activities like team sports, while others find renewal in solo pursuits such as writing or meditation. What matters most is the willingness to explore, to try new things, and to make space for personal growth through the outlets that resonate with you.

The discussion closed with a reflective question: If you could give one piece of advice to a younger attorney or law student about integrating wellness or hobbies into their career, what would it be? Responses varied, but a common thread emerged — prioritize time for the activities that matter to you and nurture both personal and professional growth.

Looking Ahead

The conversation continues at the YLD Lunch & Golf Social on April 11, where young lawyers and law students will have another chance to connect, reflect and grow together. While the law may be our shared profession, it’s the people, passions, and purpose we bring to it that make it meaningful.
