Lawyers for Literacy (L4L)

The Legal LINK Committee is coordinating with Paul Vaughan of the North Carolina Bar Foundation to partner and get volunteers for the Lawyers for Literacy (L4L) Program. This program allows judges, attorneys, paralegals and law students the opportunity to share their time and love of reading with young students working on improving their reading skills. Each volunteer commits to read with students each week for 30 minutes for a period of four weeks, and the books are provided by the NCBF.

If you or any of your colleagues are willing to help empower future generations with a love for reading and knowledge, please email Cherell Harris at [email protected] with your contact information and current location. In order to get the program started for this school term, we are requesting that volunteers respond as soon as possible with the aforementioned information. Typically volunteers are grouped by location so we know which schools to engage.

Clerkship Video Series

The NCBA YLD Law Student Outreach Committee has organized a Clerkship Video Series consisting of pre-recorded interviews between law clerks and their judges from numerous North Carolina courts.

The Clerkship Video Series is designed to provide law students with useful information about clerkships in an easy to follow, leisurely format. The interviews delve into the following topics:

  • Daily expectations of law clerks
  • How judges operate their chambers
  • Judges’ hiring practices
  • Recommendations on making yourself marketable for law clerk positions

New interviews will be released on a monthly basis and the series will conclude in Spring 2022 with a panel of former law clerks who will provide insight on their various career paths following their clerkships. Questions? Reach out to Cheyenne Merrigan, NCBA Communities Manager.

Social and Headshot Event

Join the YLD following the Spring Quarterly Council Meeting and Annual Planning Meeting for free appetizers and drinks in the galleria of the Bar Center.

We will also be offering 50 FREE professional headshots to YLD members, which also includes our law student members. Please join us for a great opportunity to network and update your headshot!
