Membership in the Legal Practice Hall of Fame is a significant recognition by the North Carolina Bar Association of the lifelong achievements of lawyers who have practiced in North Carolina for thirty years or more. Started in 1989 as the General Practice Hall of Fame, this recognition has now been afforded to 164 members of the Association.

Senior Lawyers Division chair Bruce Huggins believes these recipients “truly represent the best of our profession in excellence of practice, professionalism, courtesy and community service.” “The Senior Lawyers Division is honored to have assumed the responsibility to select the recipients of this award beginning in 2019,” says Chairman Huggins.
The General Practice Hall of Fame will now be known as the Legal Practice Hall of Fame following formal approval of the name change by the North Carolina Bar Association Board of Governors at the winter meeting on Jan. 17.
First, the General Practice Section, which established the General Practice Hall of Fame in 1989, recently merged with the Law Practice Management Section to form the Small Firm & Technology Section. In conjunction with the establishment of this combined section, the Senior Lawyers Division has assumed responsibility for administering the hall of fame.
Second, by changing the name to the Legal Practice Hall of Fame, the pool of eligible inductees expands significantly, as stated in the proposal, to now include “North Carolina attorneys who have engaged in any aspect of law practice principally in North Carolina for 30 years or more and whose actions evidence a lifetime of exemplary legal practice and high ethical and professional standards as a practitioner of the law and for serving as a role model for all lawyers in North Carolina.”
Erwin Fuller and Ed Gaskins, current and immediate past chairs of the Senior Lawyers Division, respectively, expressed their excitement over the Division’s new responsibility and the hall of fame’s new name.
“The Senior Lawyers Division is delighted to become the North Carolina Bar Association’s sponsor group for the newly renamed hall of fame award,” Fuller and Gaskins stated. “Having this award become the NCBA Legal Practice Hall of Fame instead of the General Practice Hall of Fame dramatically increases the number of potential award recipients.
“But, going forward, the same long-established high standards for award recognition will remain basically unchanged. We look forward to recognizing a maximum of six exemplary North Carolina attorneys from all across the state in 2019, and we welcome award recipient nominations.”
The Senior Lawyers Division, they added, is grateful for the legacy of the General Practice Section for creating the award and entrusting it now into the hands of the Senior Lawyers Division.
Gaskins and former NCBA Director of Sections and Divisions Jane Weathers are coordinating selection of new inductees, working in concert with Emily Poindexter, NCBA Communities Manager and staff liaison to the Senior Lawyers Division.
Nominations are now open for the 2019 Legal Practice Hall of Fame induction class, which will be honored at the NCBA Annual Meeting in Asheville, scheduled June 20-23 at Biltmore. Honorees will be recognized at the Awards Dinner on Thursday, June 20. The new inductees and all past recipients of the award will also be invited to and be recognized at the fall meeting of the Senior Lawyers Division (date and location to be determined).
Future listings of Legal Practice Hall of Fame recipients will include all 160 attorneys listed below who were recognized as General Practice Hall of Fame recipients.

The early registration deadline for the 3-hour CLE segment on Friday morning, Nov. 9, is this Friday, Oct. 19. Beginning next week, unless the early registration deadline is extended a few days because of the recent hurricanes which affected our state severely, the CLE registration fee for our meeting will increase to $125.00 instead of $115.00. There will not be a CLE segment of our meeting on Saturday morning, Nov. 10, but we will have three interesting and informative speakers (non-CLE) for that Saturday morning session. The preferred direct telephone number to use for room reservations at the Courtyard by Marriott in Salisbury is (704) 680-9201, and you will need to identify yourself as a NCBA SLD member to receive the favorable room rate (which is only guaranteed through Wednesday, Oct.31). It will be best to contact the Salisbury Courtyard by Marriott directly for room reservation purposes rather than using the national Marriott reservation system. The Salisbury Courtyard by Marriott will be the headquarters facility for our Salisbury SLD meeting.
Welcome to Fall 2018 and a new SLD program year. I hope that you all had a pleasant summer and that many of you have a special summer 2018 event memory. I’m in that group since I had a BIG birthday in July and my children and grandchildren arranged a birthday celebration weekend for the whole Fuller family at Fontana Lake in western North Carolina in early August where I got to ride on a tube pulled by a power boat (with me hanging on for dear life) together with my youngest grandchild (7½)!
Our hearts are heavy as we think about the citizens of our state living in eastern North Carolina (many of whom are SLD members) who have suffered devastating damage and loss from Hurricane Florence winds and rainfall, and I know that SLD members who were spared this tragedy will be reaching out with financial and other assistance for storm victims in the coming weeks and months.
I am excited to tell you about the SLD 2018 Fall Meeting which will take place in Salisbury during the weekend of Nov. 8-10. We are planning an interesting event which will combine a three-hour CLE video replay component on Friday morning, Nov. 9, three interesting and enlightening speakers (non-CLE) on Saturday morning, Nov. 10, a fine group of dining experiences plus visits to local sites on Friday and Saturday, and a celebration dinner at the Salisbury Country Club on Friday evening, Nov. 9, following a reception at the home of Glenn and Susan Ketner which is within sight of the celebration dinner venue.
