As we begin the new year, data security and privacy law are definitively in vogue. Between Russia’s social media campaigns,[1] renewed tensions with China that include their industrial cyber theft operations,[2] breaches at major U.S. companies like Equifax,[3] Facebook,[4] Yahoo,[5] and Marriot,[6] and the unending barrage of privacy policy updates that the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (“GDPR”) has spurred,[7] cybersecurity and privacy issues can justifiably jump to the top of the list of issues lawyers need to address as soon as possible. A full text search engine will increase the efficiency of a simple DIY file management system and there are a number of fairly low cost tools available. Increasingly a law firm’s information is spread out on hard drives, cloud servers, local servers, external drives and elsewhere. Those with Windows 10 operating systems will find an effective search tool built into the system. The search is fast and efficient, but somewhat limited in the types of files it will index. For instance, it will not create a full text index of WordPerfect document files. Mac users have Spotlight built in for search, though other search tools like QuickSilver add functionality. But, what if you want to search everything, everywhere all at once? Is it too much to ask for a search that quickly finds email, files stored locally and on the cloud, in a variety of file types?

That’s what Doyle, an attorney and consulting psychologist, has done in his new book of personal essays, “Mud and Dreams,” a collection of small stories and memories that build upon one another to form a powerful call to embrace the world with positivity and love.
In addition to a law degree from Loyola University, Doyle holds a master’s degree in positive psychology from the University of Pennsylvania. He currently serves as general counsel to RTP-based MCNC, a position he balances alongside writing, teaching, working as a well-being consultant and serving on NC BarCARES Board of Directors and the NCBA’s Professional Wellness Committee. All of these pursuits inform “Mud and Dreams,” a tidy book that is part memoir, part personal growth manual and impossible to read in public because it will make you cry like a small child.
